Followup: Are You Concerned about Identity Theft?

A number of readers responded to last week's editorial with personal experiences in which they had credit card numbers or other personal information stolen, both online and in "real world" transactions. Most, though, noted that taking a few precautions will greatly reduce the chances of falling victim to this ploy. Most importantly, we recommend doing the following:

• Ensure that you know with whom you're dealing when you give out information
• Check to be sure that e-commerce sites from which you buy use encryption (SSL) to secure transactions
• Never respond to "spam scams" - email messages purporting to be from your bank or an online vendor or service that ask you for personal information or direct you to Web sites asking for same).
• Never use your social security number as your password or PIN.
• Shred paper documents that contain personal info before throwing them out.
• For online transactions, use credit cards (which carry government mandated protection for the consumer against fraud) instead of debit cards. This can make the difference between having the charges easily removed and being stuck with the loss yourself.
