I just spent a couple of minutes surfing around some sites after turning on Norton Internet Security Ad Blocking.... Just a few first impressions about it....
Sure enough on some sites, the Google Adsense is blocked. But on others, it is not blocked! So far, the main difference seems to be that the not blocked sites were written with FrontPage , although this is probably just a symptom rather than the cause.
I didn't find any affiliate links to Amazon being blocked. Both "Buy this now" and linked pictures and such, all seemed to work.
PCMag.com home page looks really naked with this turned on... There is "Advertisement Intel Showcase" with 2 empty bullet points under it. Another sponsors box with 12 empty bullet points. The "Ziff Davis Featured Sites" box on an article was empty.... There was still a giant advertisement for signing up for PC Magazine.
BTW, I've started to loose respect for PCMag's John Dvorak, he seems to be morphing into some kind of a luddite the sky is falling bablebot, (one of the discussions has a reader comment 'I am tiring of your doom-and-gloom scenarios, spun out week after week....') but this article about internet disinformation was pretty funny: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1536921,00.asp Everything he says here applies equally to the mainstream media too, and even old books in used bookstores.
CNN website was not too badly damaged. Right hand column ads were gone, but in the left hand colums were "buy story reprints", "find a mortgage", and a giant form to sign up for Money magazine... The links like Buy Story Reprints and Find A Mortgage seemed to link to regular webpages on their CNN money subsite. I didn't try throwing these things in the Norton Ad Trashcan to see if Norton would then start blocking them...
