The meaning of the word fame may be seen from its opposite, infamous. That is, one may be utterly without fame. If fame implies only notoriety, then infamous would imply only one with-oit notoriety. But infamous means having an odious reputation — a positive, not a negative meaning.
Socrates said: "Fame is a perfume of heroic deeds."
Shakespeare's words are: "He lives in fame who died in virtue's cause."
