Recent articles have talked about the craze of eating cicadas. A popular way to prepare cicadas is to sautee them in butter with crushed garlic and basil.
However, at least one person, a man from Bloomington Indiana, who was already known to be allergic to shellfish suffered a strong allergic reaction after eating 30 of the insects.
According to Dr. Al Ripani, "He said they didn't taste too bad, but his wife didn't care for the aroma." The man experienced a "significant allergic reaction", reporting to the hospital covered head-to-toe in hives.
Treatment for allergic reaction to ingesting cicadas is similar to treatment for other severe allergic reactions, and can involve antihistamines, steroids, shot of adrenaline, and observation.
Dr. Ripani warned that "Severe food allergies such as this can be fatal. I feel that needs to be stressed in these articles."
University of Maryland is distributing a Cicada-licious cookbook with recipes for Cicada Stir-Fry and Cicada Dumplings. It does have a disclaimer asking people to consult a doctor before gorging on cicadas.
