Malaysian Group believes Bigfoot does exist in Johor jungles

Bigfoot , Malaysia

BY NELSON BENJAMIN
The Johor branch of the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) believes in the existence of the legendary “Bigfoot” in the rich jungles of Johor as there have been sightings and the discovery of huge footprints over the past ten years.

The society’s advisor Vincent Chow said he personally believed in Bigfoot as there were many such sightings around the world.

“The creature has many names including Abominable Snowman in Nepal, Sasquatch in the United States, Yeti in Tibet, Yowie in Australia and Orang Pendek in Sumatra.

“In Malaysia, the creature is known as Mawas or Jarang Gigi among orang asli as there are gaps between its teeth,” Chow said.

He said that most Bigfoot sightings were in the forests of Endau Rompin, Mersing, Kahang, Tanjung Piai and Kota Tinggi.

“With so many sightings, we cannot dismiss Bigfoot as a legend,” Chow said, adding that he had believed in Bigfoot since he was young. When he was 14 years old, his father had taken him to Kulai to look at huge footprints believed to be Bigfoot’s.

He said the latest sighting was reported last month after a group of workers saw a huge furry creature in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi.

He said the workers and another group of people, including a MNS member, followed the creature but lost track of it at a river.

“What shocked them was huge footprints of between 40cm and 50cm in the mud,” Chow said, adding that there were reports that there were at least a few of the creatures.

He said most reports said the creature was 2m to 2.5m tall and did not harm anyone.

Asked whether the society will fund an expedition to locate the creature in Johor, Chow said it would not be easy as it involved an area of several hundred square kilometres.

“The creature may be the missing link between humans and monkeys,” Chow said, adding that those interested could look up the book Lost World of The East by Steward Wavell, a well known BBC radio commentator. The book has a chapter on Mawas purportedly seen in Trolak, Perak, in the 1960s.

He said an interesting Internet site for Bigfoot enthusiasts was http://www.occultopedia.com/m/mawas.htm
