Dehydration is the loss of water and salts from the body. Dehydration includes loss of water and important blood salts like potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+).
The human body needs water to maintain enough blood and other fluids to function properly. Dehydration is classified as mild, moderate, or severe based on how much of the fluid mass has been lost.
Serious cases usually occur in infants, because even a small amount of water loss can amount to a large percentage of the fluid mass of the infant. Dehydration is a world wide problem, and affects many children and infants in the third word countries.
The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink plenty of clean liquids everyday, especially water. Some drinks, such as alcoholic drinks, can actually cause dehydration.
Dehydration is particularly common in older people, because their thirst center does not properly register the body's need for water.
