Copy protection attempts to limit how many times a user can copy a given software program or file to different computers. Copy protection comes in many forms including hardware dongles, locking to specific computer hardware, protected media, certificate systems, and challenge response systems. Some forms of copy protection are internet based. Microsoft uses an activation system to limit the number of computers a given license can be used on.
I've broken too many copy protection systems to be a very big fan of them. I prefer copy protection through innovation. In other words, regularly improve your program, fix bugs, listen to your users and add new functions that real people need. Keep improving your program so that people want to come back and get the latest copy of your program. Turn the thieves into customers when they can't get a shared copy of your very latest program.
And, another issue to consider is how your copy protection treats your paid users. I like to say that there is a cardinal sin of copy protection that as a developer or software marketer, you must not commit:
If you commit this sin, you are doing a very bad thing. Copy protection through innovation usually prevents this, although, by releasing poorly tested updates, you can commit another cardinal sin, i.e.,
Despite the risk of breaking a good program when you update it, in general, I believe that the time you spend worrying about "protecting" your program against piracy is much better spent on adding new features that real users want, and fixing any bugs that are found.
Description of some specific types of copy protection:

ClickLocker?Create does not deliver as promised, and their support is inept at best.
We were very excited to start using their program, having reviewed their site thoroughly. We used ClickLocker?Create to secure one of our software programs and found the ClickLocker?Create security mechanism dismantled and our software offered up on several warez sites within two weeks. We contacted ClickLocker?Create support and didn’t receive as much as an apology, let alone restitution for the lost revenue of pirates downloading and distributing our cracked software.
We had anothe issue with an installer file with ClickLocker?Create and their support team responded with a ridiculous NON-solution.
Again, we were very excited about the prospects of ClickLocker?Create, but were left very disappointed.
