Information about Cicadids:
- Cicadids are not locusts. Locusts are a kind of grasshopper
- While living underground, cicadas are called nymphs. They feed on roots while underground.
- After 17 years of feeding, they climb out of the ground, and shed their skin. The cicada is then an adult.
- Cicadids do not sting, bite or otherwise attack humans. Frequently, cicadas shells can become a nuisance, with numerous dead cicadas littering people's yards. Additionally, the loud singing of cicadas is irritating to some people.
- Trees and shrubs may suffer some damage from the cicadas, because of the cicada's method of planting eggs into cuts they make in new tree shoots.
- During the 2004 summer, 17 year cicadas are expected to emerge in Maryland
- They can pose a threat to cyclists. While good eye protection is essential, during Cicada season, full face protection becomes more essential. At highway speeds, the impact of a large grasshopper or cicada can hurt. There is also a threat of sliding on the slick shells that they shed when the cicadas molt.
- Dogs like to eat cicadids. Some kinds of dogs, such as Springer Spaniels, and other pointer breeds of dogs, instinctively hunt for things like cicadas and bees.
- Cats are also known to hunt cicadids. "It's a hoot when they come inside with one in their mouth. Your cat's walking around going buzzzzzzz."
