Cicadas come from eggs planted long ago in tree branches. Tiny, six-legged nymphs hatched out of them, fell to the ground, and scurried down into the soil. Once underground, they settled down on the tree roots and began to feed. Then they stayed down there, nice and snug, sucking sap for 13, or 17 years. That's right, more than a decade! Periodical cicadas are North America's longest-lived insects.
When the cicadas come to the surface, they do so by burrowing dime sized tunnels.
Frequently Asked Question About Cicadas: Why do periodical cicadas emerge only every 13 or 17 years?
Answer:
When cicadas come out of the ground at the same time, this is known as a mass emergence. Experts beleive that these mass emergences in odd-numbered years are apparently a means to avoid being eaten by predators such as birds, thus assuring survival of the cicada species. Since it is more than a decade between emergences, it is difficult for predators to track when the insects will be available. Predators have nothing to eat for several years, and then all of a sudden an enormous number of large insects emerge; there are too many for the local birds to eat.
