Question: Why do periodical cicadas emerge only every 13 or 17 years?
Answer:
When cicadas come out of the ground at the same time, this is known as a mass emergence. Experts beleive that these mass emergences in odd-numbered years are apparently a means to avoid being eaten by predators such as birds, thus assuring survival of the cicada species. Since it is more than a decade between emergences, it is difficult for predators to track when the insects will be available. Predators have nothing to eat for several years, and then all of a sudden an enormous number of large insects emerge; there are too many for the local birds to eat.
