Q. Can cicadas hurt me or my pet?
There are reports of seafood type allergic reactions being experienced by some people after eating cicadas. Hospitals in Bloomington Indiana are reporting cases of people coming in with hives after eating cicadas. It is also possible that the people are having a reaction to pesticides that the cicadas have ingested during their 17 years underground.
Doctors say people who are allergic to shellfish or other foods should eat cicadas with caution. A man who ate thirty sauteed cicadas and broke out in hives was found to be allergic to shellfish.
Because of the danger of pesticides, it is probably better to have pets avoid eating the insects.
