December 27, 2004, morning Malaysia time, 24 hours later....
Christmas greetings from sunny, sweaty, monsoony Malaysia .... Don't know if you heard about the big earth quake yesterday, but the tidal wave from it pretty badly damaged Penang island here in Malaysia.
That is a touristic island I was just visiting two weeks ago. A 21 foot high wall of water slammed into the island. All day yesterday I was hearing conflicting reports of dozens dead, hundreds injured, from the coast side resort area, Gurney Drive.
I'm seeing various numbers on the strength of the earthquake, anywhere from 8.3 to 8.8, which means it was anywhere from 12 to 80 times as strong as either the San Francisco earthquake or the later Riverside quake in California. The earthquake was 100 miles out in the water from north coast of Indonesia, and most of the damage is due to the action of the tidal wave that seems to have fanned out in a cone towards the north from earthquake. We are to the east and south of the epicenter, and about 40 miles inland, so most people here in Kuala Lumpur didn't feel anything yesterday. But I hear that Penang, which is three hours drive closer to the center of the quake, and on the west side of Malaysia closest to the quake, felt the tremors a while before the wall of water hit. Unfortunately there was no advance warning about the wall of water. Thousands dead in India, and Sri Lanka, including the sinking of a Sri Lankan Navy ship with 20 sailors lost, also considerable damage in the Phuket resort of Thailand . Two tsunami waves struck within 30 seconds of each other. The biggest problem is perhaps not the incoming force of a wall of water travelling 50 miles per hour, but when the water receeds it then sucks everything it can back out to sea.
The latest I am hearing just now is 9.0 earthquake 100 miles off the Sumatra islands. 11,000 dead, 8,000 of them in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Thailand official death toll is 400 or so, but there are also 600 people listed as missing at sea, many probably elderly and children who couldn't grab ahold of something and keep from being swept out to sea.
This is the first disaster to strike several Asian and South East Asian countries at the same time, it's a big surprise to everyone here.
