Phil Henry show is on in the afternoons, or evenings, on a number of radio stations. His shows feature interviews of interesting individuals, and editorials on various current events.
Phil thinks that a station might be using a cash box. It is a piece of technology that can eliminate little bits of dead air, to cram the stuff together. It is done so that they can open another minute or two of commercial available. It is an example of the business of radio, it is theatrical, and it is totally foreign and swahili to radio people. Phil appreciates everyone who buys air time on his show. But it would be easier if they understand what is done. This is done in Los Angeles. They take 3 hours of hard show prep, and throw it in the toilet. Phil is not coming on with guest and taking opinions, and Phil would rather swallow a razor blade than do that. The cash box destroys all the timing, all the pacing, it destroys the show. Phil asks, "Why do I waste my time?"
No one understand the point of Phil's show, and they cash box his show and destroy it. This is going on at a time when Phil is fighting for every listener. The show is on a 7 second delay, so Phil doesn't know what it sounds like. Who would want to listen to something like that?
Phil suggests the radio station shows do a better job of selling the advertising time, instead of ripping off two or three extra minutes from each show.
It is like going to work and building a beautiful house, and having someone pee on the place.
If Phil had known when he was 19 years old, when he first stepped into a radio station, he would have went to school. "Stay in school kids" Phil says.
Phil went on to say, "Thank you very much for destroying the timing and pacing of my radio show. I guess I have nothing better to do than come in here for 3 hours every day to put together a show, and then have it destroyed by a cash box."
