Q: I have a client who is asking whether or not OSCommerce would be a good choice to build an Amazon Associates site with.
A: OSCommerce is more intended for direct sales of online products that the website owner is selling. It would not be my first choice for an affiliates program website.
But, OS-Commerce would offer some categorization (grouping) of products, and also a reasonable site search.
I've considering seeding some of my client's OSCommerce sites with amazon and other affiliate items, but so far they dont see the wisdom in offering more stuff to their visitors that would have their visitors going off to "competitors".
OS Commerce is a fun system to modify. It is written in PHP, and uses a MySQL database backend. It is also freely available, and easy enough to install. I've customized some of my clients sites pretty heavily, and I'm sure it would be easier to mod it to be Amazon Associates appropriate, than to create a site from scratch with all those features.
