Books - The Fight For Jerusalem
Radical Islam, the West, and Future of the Holy City
Jerusalem is under
attack. The assault
on the truth of its
biblical past is only the beginning of the compromise to its political future. Western diplomats argue that by pushing hard for a Middle East settlement, with redivision of Jerusalem at its core, the flames of Islamic radical rage will be lowered, stemming the tide of al-Qaeda's ideological spread. Yet exactly the opposite is true. In recent decades, the flames of radical Islam have been fanned by its sense of victory in the face of repeated withdrawals by the west: A redivision of Jerusalem would not only endanger its holy sites, but also unleash additional jihadist momentum, on a scale that most political leaders have not begun to consider.
Book Description
Radical Islam has long desired to seize Jerusalem and cut it off to Christian and Jewish believers. In his revealing new book, The Fight for Jerusalem, bestselling author and former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold explains why the battle for Jerusalem is intensifying today. Gold shows why only Israel can preserve its holy places for Christians, Jews, and even Muslims, and why uncovering Jerusalem's past-and the truth of biblical history-can be the key to saving its future.
This book is a political history of the city of Jerusalem focusing on the relationship that the great monotheistic religions have had with the Holy City. It can be divided into three portions, the first, taking about a third of the book is the ancient history of the City from pre-biblical times to the dawn of the modern age, the second part, taking about the same amount of space is the modern history of the city with a focus on the British mandatory rule and the introduction of Israeli sovereignty. Finally, it discusses the recent history particularly focusing on the last 10 - 15 years. Interspersed throughout the book are discussions of international law and sovereignty issues.
This book refutes Arafat's claims, since echoed throughout the Arab world, that the Jews have NO historical or theological claim to Jerusalem. Arafat even went so far as to claim that the First and Second Temples were never in Jerusalem. Gold's book does refute that claim, and others like it, brilliantly.
