VATICAN INFORMATION SERVICE
THIRTEENTH YEAR - N. 167 ENGLISH FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2003
SUMMARY:
VATICAN CITY, OCT 3, 2003 (VIS) - Today the Pope received Fr. Joseph Tobin, superior general of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redemptor (Redemptorists), and participants in their general chapter which is being celebrated during these days.
After recalling that the main theme of the general chapter is "reflecting on 'giving one's life for abundant redemption'," John Paul II said that it was also important to examine the state of the Institute. He spoke about new vocations in some countries and their scarcity in other countries. "If the temptation of conforming to lifestyles, which are culturally dominant today, were to contaminate your communities, your religious spirit and evangelizing impetus would run the risk of being weakened."
"I am sure," he continued, "that this General Chapter will create a more decisive stimulus in the work of renewal that you have embarked upon, discovering priorities and brave apostolic decisions. < In order to successfully carry out this special missionary service, it is necessary, above all, that you cultivate an intense personal and community prayer life."
The Holy Father assured them that "in these times, for various causes, many people are far from Christ and the Church and many are still waiting to hear the Gospel for the first time. Inspired by the example of St. Alphonsus, and other saints and blesseds of your institute, do not hesitate to reach out to them, to present the Gospel to them with language, appropriate for their various personal and environmental situations."
"If you proclaim the 'copiosa redemptio,' or God's infinite love for humanity, with joy and unity of life, you will revive and confirm the hope of the Gospel in the hearts of so many people, especially those in most need, because they have been stained by sin and its evil consequences. I hope with all my heart that useful directives are produced at this meeting for effective apostolic programming which responds to the needs and challenges of our time."

The Secret Life of the Catholic Church in an Age of Scandal
When, in early 2002, a team of Boston Globe reporters broke open the pedophilia scandal around Father John J. Geoghan—and then Paul Shanley, Joseph Birmingham, and hundreds of other priests in Boston and across the country—the entire American Catholic Church spun into crisis. But by that time, the damage was already done. Perhaps a hundred thousand children had already fallen into traps laid by their priests. Every Catholic in the country – and everyone who had ever set foot in a church—faced troubling questions: Why had this happened? How could the secrets of this abuse have been so widely held, and so closely protected? How could the church have let it happen?

A Travel Guide To Heaven
If heaven’s so great, why aren’t most of us more excited about getting there?
A recent Newsweek poll reports that 76 percent of Americans believe in heaven. Yet even avid believers have difficulty conjuring up more than vague images of halos, harps, and wispy angels in flowing robes. Anthony DeStefano?Create|Search knew there had to be a more complete, meaningful vision of what heaven is like, and A TRAVEL GUIDE TO HEAVEN is the entertaining and enlightening result.
Using the Bible as his guide, along with an extraordinary sense of logic, fun, and adventure, DeStefano?Create|Search set out to look for clues about the place called heaven: what will it look like? What will we look like? What will there be for us to do? Will we have pets? He learned that this highly spiritual place is actually very physical.
In fact, heaven can be best compared to a five-star luxury resort, more exquisite than a Hawaiian sunset, more thrilling than Alpine skiing, more fun than a wicked game of tennis, and more riveting than the best novel. After all, it was created by the One who created everything!
A TRAVEL GUIDE TO HEAVEN provides a delicious preview of a place bursting with beauty, excitement, challenges, fun, and perfect delight. Forever.
