Art Bell, W6OBB, was on 80 meters tonight at 20:44PST.
Discussion about antennas with AA6US, Larry in Southern California. Larry's signal is S9 up in Marin County. Larry is running a Henry 2K Classic X and a Yaesu FT900, and 4 half wave antennas in phase at 50 to 55 feet. This gives him 6db over.
Art was commenting about there being a lot of DX on 40 meters at night. To Japan and Australia it is sensational. Between now and 11pm, it is easy to work into Europe and Africa.
When KC6YKE asked Art about the spoof on Phil Henry Show , Art replied "Phil makes a career out of spoofing me."
Art was asked about WOAI about AA6US. Art has not been to the WOAI transmitter site. The lower down the AM band, the better the signal. KFI at 640 is a giant station. But WOAI at 1240 is much louder.
640 would be better around terrain and mountains, the lower the frequency the better the terrain hopping. Up at 1200, the propogation characteristics change greatly. Clear channel on 1200 is going to have much better sky wave.
Art hears KFI full scale in the day time. He doesn't need a sloper.
The Mars picture is now up on the ham cam. The picture is from an orbitting satellite over Mars.
Art has a bit of a null in a few direction, and even in the nulls, he can compete with other stations.
A copper sheet under the loop wouldn't change the pattern. Using the copper sheets can increase the signal 6 fold.
Art has a welded wire mesh under his loop, 4 feet wide, for a distance of 1600 feet. One inch squares. At the frequencies Art works, it appears as a solid. The loop passes by two water wells, that go down to 160 feet with steel casings. So the steel casing was welded to the wire mesh. Plus he has additional ground rods.
Not important to bury it. RF doesn't penetrate the ground more than a few inches.
Would a water table at 30 feet help an antenna? No, RF doesn't go down that far.
Art hasn't been hit by lightning. Everything is grounded, the towers, the guy wires, and he didn't get hit last year. Art hopes that all the grounding protects the antennas from the lightning.
Art has a loop at 68 feet and at 75 feet, all the way around. One loop is above the other, 7 feet apart.
Art posted this picture at www.hamcams.com
It's just a bit past the full moon. N6KG also on the frequency.
Art has only to sort through 2000 emails a day...
Art was hearing some signal on Aurora Borealis.
W6YNF checked in. KD7BCW demonstrated a 10 minute timer alarm for giving ID.
The solar flare did arrive last night, and we did get the effects of it.
Larry AA6US, used to be a writer by trade. He was writing a long email to his friend.
WL7DUJ Bernie checking out.
On frequency tonight: NC7J... AA6US... W6YNF... KD7BCW... W7NTF... N7JL... W6OBB... QSY to the usual frequency which has had guys from Michigan on it earlier tonight.
Pahrump Nevada is 6 miles from the California border.
Art's wife Ramona came on frequency for a little while and spoke to several of the people onfrequency including Tim in San Bernadino. KD6BCW, Ben, mentioned to Ramona that he had a recipe for hot sauce to send to her.
On frequency WB6TDK... WA6DHC...
Someone else commenting:
Art uses a notch filter to knock out tune up sounds.
Larry is laying down hundreds of feet of copper. Might as well pave the entire property with copper, a copper quilt. Art said "Can you imagine that blinding pilots?"
Someone else commented eventually the copper would turn green. Other suggested gold, but it might be a little more costly. Art said that someone was trying to suggest a gold coating all his wires.
Someone else suggested that Art Bell can move into a harbor, and use the salt water as a ground.
Jim was saying, there is no neccessity for any horizontal loop to have a ground. But a vertical antenna must have a ground. A ground under a horizontal antenna probably just reflects some wasted energy back up into the air vertically.
Art says that a "half wave vertical will work well without a great ground". But a 5/8ths vertical with radials will work better. The earth will also provide some ground, but it might be a poor ground.
Art Bell, W6OBB, says this is the best picture he has ever seen of a signal meter.
Our brains automatically adjust the colors we look at. Wearing glasses that cause color change will make things seem strange for a while. These glasses will make things like the sky seem very green. But after a while, things will seem normal. After taking them off, things will seem magenta or pink. That is because things are opposite in color.
KI6GU spent time doing color correction on motion picture film.
Incandescent light really is redish and warm. Daylight is bluish. On film, things show up like this because there is no compensation. But our brain automatically compensates for these things.
When a movie is shot in a certain environment, sometimes they can't control the lights so well. A colorist has to go through the film and compensate for these kinds of things like florescent lights. This is so that all the scenes look consistent.
Dr. Land was the first one to observe this, and in about 1968 there was an article in Scientific American about this. Dr. Land, of the polaroid fame, was able to get full colors with different shades of yellow. No one had ever tried this before to use only two colors, science thought that three colors was needed.
All the other colors are based off of what white is.
Projected materials have primary colors of red green and blue. But in print, the opposite colors are used, because they are absorptive to the light. In print they can also use black.
Discussion of Ramona's lightning picture. Art says it was just luck, Ramona has trouble framing people in pictures.
Art Bell can't stand Lyndon Johnson, because Johnson was trying to micromanage everything.
Johnson was effective as a president, other than the war. He was able to get things done.
When he left the White House, he helped himself to a lot of furnishings of the White House at taxpayer expense.
Someone told the story of Lyndon Johnson kicking the shins of someone else.
Art Bell says that his handling of the Vietnam War was reprehensible.
Art commented about the micromanagement:
Lady Bird Johnson tried to demand that Art Bell put his radio programs on her radio station in Austin. KLBJ in Austin texas. Art rejected the idea, but he said he received a lot of threats about it.
Started out as Lady Bird would be glad to meet with you, then the threats started coming. Ultimately it worked, Clear Channel went to the station.
Ms. Johnson didn't like the Burma Shave signs.
Drudge report saying that Korea says they are on the brink of Nuclear War with it. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/040409/1/3jdy5.html
The people living in North Korea are living in very horrible conditions. People out on dirt roads picking up insects to have something to eat.
Talk about someone in New York who went a bit crazy, and was pulling on people's coat tails accusing them of being FBI agents.
Some people claiming Art Bell might be in the CIA.
Discussions about people who are on the edge of reality.
Behaviour over several months will speak a lot about someone.
Discussing how to setup a cloaking device for Art's towers to protect them from Steve. Steve says he has already flown over Art's house at 3000 feet. Steve said he was flying a private plane.
