Are Earthquakes Caused By Global Warming

Today, in September 2005, as we think about the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we now hear about an earthquake of as much as Richter 7.5 rating in Peru. While many people are blaiming humankind for global warming being the cause of a tremendous increase in hurricanes during the last 50 years, some people in other parts of the country are wondering if their own disasters could also be increasing for similar reasons. For example, is it possible that earthquakes are caused by global warming?
Some people are asking what the melting of ice caps and glaciers might cause. Will the land rise due to the decreased weight? Some geophysicists are arguing that glaciers help prevent earthquakes in areas like Alaska, which has recently experienced powerful earthquakes. Canada, and Scandinavia seem to have had an increase in major quakes in the last 10,000 as ice masses receded.
Dr. Jeanne Sauber of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., says that "in areas like Alaska where earthquakes occur and glaciers are changing, their relationship must be considered to better assess earthquake hazard." She adds that satellites are helping seismologists do this "by tracking the changes in extent and volume of the ice and movement of the Earth."
However, before closing judgment on this issue, there is some controversy to consider. Other scientists say that these links of tsunamis and earthquakes to global warming are "abject rubbish".
"If one wants to make the argument that alterations in weather patterns have an effect on the stresses of the earth's tectonic plates, which are far beneath the ocean, one is ignoring virtually every physical aspect of the ocean," said Patrick J. Michaels, an environmental sciences professor at the University of Virginia.
