Animals Disappearing From What Forests Remain On Singapores Sentosa Island
Then we proceeded to Sentosa Island, a tourist attraction with a cable car ride to the island. We went to to visit the Butterfly farm and the insect house there. We met a really nice naturalist there who enjoyed playing with a hand sized scorpion while practically tossing it around, kissing it, petting it, tickling it, and explaining how animals like these don’t hurt people, it’s only when animals are very small and suck blood and spread disease, or when they get smart enough to get knives and guns or fly planes into buildings that you have to worry about them. The scorpion didn’t seem to get too upset about the attention. He explained how the scorpions were scavengers, and these which were about as long as his hand and four months old would be turned loose on the island to do their cleanup jobs once they reach twice the length of his hand. They are a good measure of the health of the islands forest, they were surprised to find one that lived to be four years old. He also showed a good way to tell if an arthropod is healthy, put it upside down on the ground and see if it can turn itself upright. He then told us how they were getting ready to clear 54 hectares of the forest on the island for a casino, and how a lot of the animals he used to see he doesn’t see anymore, and how each few years they estimate they are losing a two or three percent of the species on the island. Generally Singaporeans aren’t too concerned about insects, they are just to be squished underfoot while worrying about how to afford a Mercedes.
