How Telemarketers Sell You Things You Don't Want

Subjects > TelemarketerPhoneNumbers

The come on? They are trying to sell a voicemail system.... They went into a pitch about how federal law requires them to tape my answers to their questions in two different time zones by two different operators. They were very insistent that I answer their questions with a yes or a no. They ask a series of short questions to get you warmed up to saying yes. Repeatedly they ask "Hello, are you there?" to get you to say Yes. Then at some point, they'll start rattling off a long paragraph that talks about you recieving a voice mail system, and the calling cards. Hidden in their speil they say something about "if you do not call to cancel your account information will will bill your card ending in XXXX...." They are hiding this in the middle of a long paragraph talking about the great calling cards. If you stop them at that point and ask them what those numbers were, then they tell you that they were reading a different number (with a few similar digits) that was supposed to be your account number with them, or maybe a reference number, depending on which rep you talk to. Then they want to start the recording over again from scratch. If you are not willing to say simple Yes/No?Create, it gives them a conniption. Do it too much, and they'll claim technical problems, that they need to call you back later.

Usually I cut these guys off and go through the junkbusters script, but I let these guys go on. The hilarious thing, is that during this spiel they were telling me how after I used up my minutes, I could call them an order more cards. After I'd interrupted the telemarketer several times, he told me he was going off the recording for a moment to tell me something... He then whispers "Don't call back for more cards, that's all I can say." Then he goes back on the recording, and tries to run his script again. Unfortunately I still wouldn't cooperate exactly, and suddenly his system was stricken with technical problems.

I think you have to be very careful with such phone calls. If you answered simple yes and no, with lots of pause around it, they could easily digitally alter the recording to make it sound like you were agreeing to their questions and to receive and be charged for their "product". So be careful. It's probably better to use the [JunkBusters Script].

The called again the next night, and gave the same customer service number, 1-800-273-6116. This time they thought yet someone else was living at my place. I told them I'm already waiting for my introductory packet, and the rep knew my name. I asked her if they had a website, and she said no. I told her I couldn't believe such a competitive company as her own wouldn't have a website, and she told me I could call customer service to ask about it. I told her that I'd already written an article about them, maybe should could look it up on the internet and read about the nice things I have to say about them (here).
