Perhaps, Ian, as you say Vicente is a true Christian with principled comments and a real paragon of ethical manhood. I cannot tell it from his messages here, There is no doubt that you know him better than I do, and I really don't mean any of this as in persona attacks, just commenting on the world as I see it.
Maybe he is a brave Colombian judge, at the forefront of the fight against the murders commited in the name of the Colombian economy... but I beg to doubt it. I have acknowleged that I have a certain responsibility for the doings of my government, and the economy that feeds me. Why is it unreasonable for me to ask that others do the same things that they demand of me, on their own turf??
You are correct, I haven't spent a lot of time, or lost a lot of sleep looking for pearls of wisdom in the spew of Anti-American sentiment that this thread would, to a casual reader, appear to be. I don't know how America looks to an Aussie, but I'd think as a radio operator you would have talked to enough of us to have some idea of our national character, at least those of us still young enough to think.
The thesis here is "America is the New Chosen People (sic)" and the following messages about fringe nut cases and paranoid ravings disturbs me. But then Vicente - and you, nice as you are - are not Americans. So why not just state your oppostition to what we are doing, and leave it at that. Characterizing ravings like that as good, principled, or well thought out makes you look a little ridiculous in my mind. Not that I mean that personally, it is just the thread, which I've somehow allowed myself to be drawn into.
Appreciate your message about disagreeing. Rest assured I have the utmost respect for you as well, and am not sure what you disagree with. To sum up I've said:
1) In light of the massive export of toxic narcotics to us and to others, Colombia is in danger of achieving terrorist status.
2) Residents and citizens of countries have an ethical duty to right such wrongs as they can, and to work for the common weal.
3) America is not in a position to leave Iraq, whatever the wisdom of going there in the first place, without causing untold death and destablizing the entire region. Would that we could, would that we could. Not even Kerry thinks we can leave now.
4) Depleted Uranium is used by a very large group of nations.. including yours.. in their armored vehicles, and any danger from exposure to it attaches to the tank crews, not pregnant women at some distance from the tank. We hope our tanks are dangerous because they make big holes in things, though.
5) Battlefields are toxic environments.
I think that pretty well sums up my messages, and I'm curious about what part of it anyone here might disagree with, beyond the inevitable Internet banter of trying to be "right". Where is the beef?
Meanwhile, enjoy the summer now that it is upon you. I hope you have a fine one. And enjoy the cheap seats - hope the view is nice.
