With all due respect, and as a card-carrying NRA life member, I feel called upon to comment on your legalize guns - swift justice theorem as mentioned in your last message.
Certainly your average citizen is not someone I want to mete out justice to those he perceives as evil doers... I think that guns, when used for Olympic target shooting, are just great. As devices for hunting for food, well, I guess. I don't hunt because I'm not hungry enough to kill, but for those that feel that they need to kill small fuzzy animals to achieve manhood, why not.
Personal protection in the home is OK too, I suppose, but a gun in that situation demands a lot of special care to keep bad things from happening, and is unlikely to ever be used for its intended purpose. It is far more likely to cause a tragedy than a good outcome, statistically.
I don't see any reason at all why an average Joe needs to carry a gun; he might hurt someone.
The key element here is, as usual, responsibility and knowlege. Any kind of gun ownership should come with a class on the legalities, proper use to prevent accidents, and safe storage practices. Should be more involved in passing than a mere multiple choice test, like a professional assesment of the class member.
The fact is that even in States like Virginia, with a "shall-issue" law, and Western states that allow non-concealed carry at any time, very very few people are so terrified as to feel they need a gun to carry around all day.
And, in case you have never been assaulted with a gun, let me guarantee you that a frightened, nervous person is the last guy in the world you want pointing a gun at you. Much like nations, people do more harm by mistake than by malice.
