Unfortunately, the cocaine trade damages predominantly the young and the poor.... Not groups known for good choices... and if Colombia and their cocaine-based economy were not there, there would be no poison for them to ingest, right?
How does Vicinte imagine that he can influence the war in Iraq, but not the largest source of his own countries income. I was serious when I said that regarding Colombia as a terrorist nation may well happen if they don't manage to live up to their commitment to greatly reduce their illicit economy by 2005.
Please don't take this personally; I have no problem with your posts.
As far as the war in Iraq goes, it would be nice if we could leave. However, having spent many years ,as I have, in the middle east, I can guarantee that the region would collapse in internicine violence and probably be taken over by Iran if we leave.
Our purpose was served when Saddam's government collapsed... perhaps a mistaken purpose. We avoided the attack on him for years, because he was an effective foil to Iran. Now, however, we are in a bind with no easy way out. A classic Oh shxt..
One of the great things about democracy is that it cannot be imposed on a people. We are in a mess there, with no easy way out. Kind of like having a tiger by the tail. We can't simply let go, nice as that would be now that our purpose is served.
I confess not to have seen any large battles there lately, but mostly Martyr's Brigade and others in guerilla actions, so while it may have rained yankee death there for a while, we aren't bombing any longer.
I really didn't want to get involved in this, since the issue is so political at the moment, but make no mistake... Kerry can't just pull out, nor can Bush. But it would be a wonderful thing not to have troops there any longer.
When foreigners start yammering about it, I just think of the problems we have with terrorists, be they Arab, South American, or Domestic, and wondering how the view is from the cheap seats.
