Al-Qaida Is Taking A Close Look At U.S. Shopping Malls
Intelligence officials believe that al-Qaida is shifting their focus to 'Soft Targets' such as shopping centers and malls. They are particularly interested in malls in the United States, and possibly also foreign countries.
The terrorist groups in the U.S. want to make another "spectacular" attack, and shopping malls are a prime target for terrorism because of the large groups of people that gather in them.
Many intelligence analysts believe that terrorist attacks are planned this year in order to influence the November 2004 elections. Many are divided on exactly what effect such an attack would have. Would we vote in pacifist representatives, like Spain did in response to their attacks? Or would the Americans have a different reaction, and rally around the current president?
There is a risk that the U.S. elections would be negatively impacted by a small, but high-profile attack, because it might cause the people to think that all of the Bush administration efforts have not made the U.S. homeland safer. It might help claims by people such as John Kerry who claim the U.S. efforts for the past two years have not improved security in the United States.
