Nasa's Challenging Problem Of Numbers Stored In Special Formats
The chart below represents the Standard American Standard Code for InformationInterchange (ASCII) set. Each character is seven bits long. Usually, however, the character is stored in its own 8-bit byte. This extra bit has been used as a parity bit. More often, several systems use all 8 bits to define extended ASCII or high ASCII ; ISO
has defined ISO 8859-1 through 8859-15 as such standards. These setsare not represented in data sets within the NSSDC. Such systems use the extra 128 characters to store non-English characters, graphics, and mathematical symbols. ASCII was originaly designed for use with teletypes (long distance typewriters, if you will), so that the use of some of the control characters are quite obscure today. In addition, some systems in use at this writing interpret CR and LF in slightly different ways.
