Does service enablement equal vendor entitlement?

By Stephen Swoyer

SOA enthusiasts have been trumpeting a coming generation of composite applications-applications that are composed of multiple, independent, plug-and-play services.

Before companies can start building composite apps and start down the path to virtual app dev Nirvana, however, they first must service enable their IT infrastructures. And in spite of the best-laid claims of many ardent proponents, the service-oriented architecture is itself still an inchoate vision.

One reason for this is SOA assumes a more or less portable understanding of what are, from enterprise to enterprise, often wildly different instantiations of traditional business processes. Because of this, service enablement is dependent on the maturation of technologies such as the Web Services Business Process Execution Language, the Business Process Modeling Language and Electronic Business XML. By ADT Staff World-class IT organizations spend 10 percent more than other companies, and have fully loaded IT wage rates that are 32 percent higher than their peers, according to 2005 Book of Numbers research from The Hackett Group, a business process advisory firm.

This is the first time in recent years that world-class IT organizations have spent more than typical companies. According to Hackett, the research data indicates this increased spending is being driven by world-class IT organizations restructuring their workforces, enhancing the skill and experience level of their staff to improve their ability to deliver competitive advantage and provide strategic support. Typical companies have made only modest improvements in these areas.

Hackett's 2005 Book of Numbers also finds that while typical companies have not significantly increased their use of shared services and outsourcing, world-class IT organizations have dramatically increased their focus in these areas. World-class IT organizations now report they have moved most of their technology portfolio to shared services, and spend significantly more than typical companies on outsourcing in key areas. World-class companies have seen a 168-percent increase in spending on outsourcing in infrastructure management and a more than 400-percent increase in spending on outsourcing in application management over the past 3 years. JBoss and Microsoft strike interoperability agreement

By ADT Staff On Tuesday, JBoss and Microsoft announced plans to enhance the interoperability between JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) and Microsoft Windows Server products and to increase JBoss support for the Windows Server operating system.

The agreement signals a shift in Microsoft's battle against open- source software providers from outright provocation and attack to a more cooperative stance.

"JBoss is experiencing tremendous growth and is a driving force of consolidation of the Java market," says Bill Hilf, director of platform technology strategy at Microsoft. "So it makes sense to work with them on interoperability and optimizing for the Windows Server platform." [More]

The IT job market in the U.S. grew over the past year, according to the annual salary survey conducted by Enterprise Systems. "The most sought-after skill is the ability to do everything with nothing," says one manager.

Software change and configuration management tools helped bridge the gaps among dispersed development teams. The market for collaborative development tools is growing rapidly, and on-demand Web services are cutting the time and effort developers and testers put into management and reporting.

Enterprises must first classify their data and then store it according to value, risk and the likelihood the information will be needed in a hurry.

September Poll Question Most enterprise have opted to build their own reporting and analysis applications instead of buying them. Three years ago, The Data Warehousing Institute put the build-versus-buy split for analytic apps at about 2:1, but according to TDWI's research, that ratio has narrowed over time.
