200 tourist bungalows were swept out to the sea. Sniffer dogs are being brought in to search for people.
Economic consequences for this tourist area of Thailand have caused the Thai government to be very public about it's efforts in this area. 40% of the 10 billion revenue from tourism is from this area. Thailand, especially the tourist areas, have phenomenal record of resilence. They are hoping that the uniqueness of the catastrophe will not keep people away in the future.

The situation is a little better in terms of communications for Phuket. Laguna Beach escaped severe damage, hospitals are still usable, and some hotels can provide shelter even if there is no electricity.
